Originally, this is a quote from Mark Twain saying that “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day” MARK TWAIN Eat that frogĪuthor Brian Tracy coined this term in the book with the same name. If you want to see just how I do it and the steps for implementation, just jump to that section. Next I will be discussing some well-known approaches to the daily highlight. At the end of the day, you will be certain that you finished your one true most important task. Without multitasking, finish that task and then go on with your day.Īnd you might finish 10 more tasks in your day or you might finish just one. When the day begins, make sure you have time blocked for that task in your calendar and take care of it first. (for example in Todoist you can red-flag it) And before the day begins, when you do you daily planning, make sure you make that task stand out on your list. Now depending on how productive you feel and also to your style you can have 1 or 2 tasks that you commit to every day. And I used those terms because different authors call them in their specific way. The second one is to make sure that only 1 or 2 of these items are categorized as highlights/big rocks/most important things. One of the solutions is to have fewer tasks on your list. So, what is the solution? Of course, this varies from person to person. the most important things from the list were not actually done.we still have a lot of things that we couldn’t get done (which is a psychological burden). We struggle all day to cross things off only to find at the end of the day that two things happen: When the list is longer there are higher chances for this to happen. Successful people have only 6 items on them, but we find ourselves in a situation in which they are much longer than that.Įven with 6 points, we might have days in which we can’t complete everything. Because it’s easier to grab low-hanging fruits, we do the small and simple tasks and leave the complex ones out.Ī lot of times our to-do lists are very long. We take care of mundane, not important tasks and let the ones that really help us move forward slip through the cracks. And I realized we don’t often do that, take care of the important things first. “Now it’s full,” he says, before revealing the moral of the story: “ If we had put the sand in first, would there have been any room for the big rocks?”Īnd even though the story is so simple, it struck a chord. The jar finally appears full - until the professor pours a bottle of water into the jar. Lastly, the professor reveals a bucket of sand, which he pours into the jar until every nook and cranny is occupied. He asks again if the jar is now full, to which the class responds yes. He shakes the jar until the pebbles settle in all the spaces between the big rocks. Then, the professor brings out a bowl of pebbles and proceeds to pour them into the jar. He asks the class if the jar is full, to which they naturally reply, yes. He brings out a platter of large, fist-sized rocks and dumps them into the jar until they reach the top. And there was a story in this book, which goes like this:Ī professor presents a class with a gallon-size glass jar he says he’s trying to fill up. And one of them was Stephen Covey’s “ Seven Habits of Highly Effective People“. Before entering the program we were supposed to read a couple of books. About 8 years ago, I was enrolled in a Leadership Program at work.
